Course Description

There is growing interest in applications of magnetic methods in a wide variety of scientific disciplines including archeology, geology and environmental science. These include dating, characterization of materials properties, reconstructing firing and emplacement temperatures, archaeological and geological magnetic surveying, subsurface detection, pollution monitoring, and many more. This course will cover the physical basis of magnetism, laboratory and field methods, and research applications. We will discuss a wide range of contemporary issues in archeo- and paleo- magnetism and the earth's magnetic field present and past, one of the most enigmatic phenomena of the planet Earth.

How to take this class:

Attend each lecture listed below either live or online. Lectures will be 12:30-1:50 pm PDT in 3030 York Hall.

Do the required reading in the textbook, Essentials of Paleomagnetism

Work the assigned problems and e-mail your answers to ltauxe@ucsd.edu. These assignments will constitute 20% of the grade.

There will be a midterm exam worth 35% of the grade and a final project worth 45% of the grade.
